I wrote about Sex Education almost a year ago, and I’m back to showcase the third season, which is also fantastic. The show is set at a fictional, private English school and follows a loveable 16-year old teenager named Otis (Asa Butterfield) as he navigates adolescence, his mother’s career as a sex therapist, and his huge crush on fellow classmate and edgy genius Maeve (Emma Mackey), with whom he has a tumultuous friendship. Otis’ best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) steals the show as a gay teen coming into his own. Last season, after realizing he has a tremendous talent for counseling, Otis successfully started an amateur sex therapy clinic with Maeve at school. This season focuses on Otis’ mom’s surprise pregnancy (at 48) and her difficulty making long-term relationships, a cruel headmaster who is cracking down on sexuality at the school, Eric’s relationship with his sweet but damaged boyfriend-classmate Adam (Connor Swindells), among many other compelling threads. The acting is truly phenomenal and the high jinx at the school will make you wince, laugh, and maybe even cry. I love this show.
