After waiting several months, I finally got off the library hold list for the New York Times‘ best seller the Vanishing Half. This fictional account of African American identical twins who are separated when one disappears was worth the wait. Without giving away too much away, the novel spans fifty years, following the identical twins – from their childhood trauma witnessing the killing of their innocent father by white men – to their daughters’ inauspicious meeting… and beyond.
The novel expertly explores not just Black versus white society, but also bias within the Black community against members with darker skin. There is also a very compassionate examination of the LGBTQ+ community.
The story hits the ground running, and you will start to dread every time you have to put it down.
