I know what you’re thinking: It must be exceedingly glamorous to receive the continued attention of the mass media, the adulation of elite critics and influencers from discerning publications and the endless encouragement of fans that come with being the Family on the Edge.
The truth is a little less romantic.
We do it for one another. With the prospect of our international summer travel plans shelved due to COVID, we needed a different mission to bring us together. This was it.
We do it to develop grit. When we started there was abundant enthusiasm to keep the blog going, but as time wore on, it was work. Learning about sticking with commitments we make to one another has been valuable.
We do it to improve a skill through repetition. Writing clearly and concisely to express an idea, flesh out a joke or explain a recipe is a muscle that grows the more it gets used. We’ve been hitting the verbal weight room.
We do it to create the right kind of introduction to social media and the online world with our kids. Getting to post on youtube and twitter as part of a our family website is a digital education that we hope will develop a comfort around navigating technology while avoiding the ickier parts of the net.
We do it to feel connected to community. At a time when physical distancing has left us feeling isolated, a minor comment from a friend or loved one helps us feel a part of something bigger.
Thanks, dear reader, for making us feel that connection in a way that keeps us going.
